It's Daniel's helmet. (He's the field assistant who I took out to Abay Deneba to talk to a couple of farmers) |

I am Chinese and I live in Zhongshan City of Guangdong Province.I was introduced to your blog by one of your friends who is my very good friend. I read your articles sometimes. Your work with treadle pumps and so on strike me very much because my family used to be farmers.
I started to help out on the farm when I was around 8 years old. It's really tough to work on the farm. We had to work very hard even under the hot sun or heavy rain. I used to hope that someone would help us with cutting the rice or sugar cane by cropper or other machine, especially for my mom because she worked extremely hard. I said to myself when I was a little kid that I did not want to be a farmer when I grew up and wanted my mom to have a comfortable life(My wishes came true already). I envied the city people who did not have to work on the farm. I wanted to be like them at that time. But not any more.
I appreciate a lot that I was a farmer once because my experience of being a farmer when I was young makes me stronger than the kids who grew up in the city.It makes me value my current life very much because it does not come easily. I believe my past is my huge fortune. I benefit from it a lot in my day-to-day life.
Because I used to be a farmer, I know what you are doing is great for the farmers in Ethiopia, Mark. It is a HUGE help to the farmers. I feel very happy for Ethiopian farmers that they have people like you around to help them. I have great respect on the work you are doing now.It is nice to know what you do in details too.

What is it with you and places/institutions/companies that only go by initials? ;-) Actually, I really enjoyed the explanation. |

Ally, thanks for your note. After one full year here, it finally feels like we're making progress. The way that IDE works isn't the fastest... it'd be much easier to just go out and donate a bunch of pumps... but I think it's more sustainable, and has potential for making a bigger difference in the lives of the people here. |

Adele, actually only two of my five employers go by initials (BMW and IDE). IDEO isn't an acronym... it's based on the word "ideology".
I like playing with my current path though: first IDEO, now IDE. Continuing the trend, my next company will be called ID (I'm guessing industrial/interaction/intelligent design, or perhaps something to do with Freud's concept of the basic human instincts), and then finally I (in other words, I'll be working for myself). :) |

My name is Mark. I was born near Chicago, have lived in the US, Germany and Nepal, and am starting a new job and a new adventure in Ethiopia. This site is a way for me to keep friends and family updated on my progress, share some pictures, and perhaps offer a bit of reflection along the way. Please look around, and enjoy the ride! Herumwandernder Cavetroll... heisse Mark.
