PHOTOS, BUT WHY?
Keywords: pictures , Ziway , motorcycle

Why do people take photos? I read an article recently (sorry, don't have the link) that talked about the current culture's obsession with digital mobile technology, particularly cell phones and digital cameras. They tried to make the case that taking a photo says to those around you that "What's going on now is less interesting than me being able to share it later." On the surface, that sounds like a negative. What if it were phrased "What's going on now is so interesting that I want to share it (and memories of it) later"? Some people take photos in order to create and share something beautiful (see Brendan's blog). I use them for storytelling. These aren't mutually exclusive, by any means, but everyone has a different reason for taking photos. Why do you take them?

Alright, enough talking about them, more posting them...

Since my dad moved back to the U.S., I've moved out of the big house I was living in. I've been staying with friends since I got back from my motorcycle trip (thank you, Jess and Brian!), and looking for a new place for myself. I finally found one, and am working on painting and furnishing it. The plan is to custom-make some of the furniture, so it will be a work in progress. I'll share some photos along the way so you can see how it's coming together.

  Hey Mark,

Glad you've found a new pad. Good luck :-)

As for your question, I'm on your side. I like telling the story. Although, I find I have to find the balance between participating and observing (through the lens). I'm not always on it perfectly. Sometimes I take too many photos, and don't enjoy the event enough. Sometimes I don't take any photos . . . and later I really wish I had. As you've rephrased, it's nice to be able to look back and remind yourself of what actually happened.
