TRIP PLANNING
Keywords: bribe , utilities , MABB , workshop

Today I shook the hand of the Libyan Ambassador to Ethiopia. But I'm getting ahead of myself...

Running with the Hash House Harriers last January, I happened to make a comment about the motorcycle I had sitting in Munich. A couple of people told me I should talk to this guy named Jason, who was looking to fly to Europe, by a motorcycle and ride it back to Addis. Long story short, Jason and I are sitting in the Addis airport, waiting for our flight to Munich for (a) my birthday party and (b) the beginning of our Munich to Addis By Bike (MABB) motorcycle tour. It's been quite the experience so far. We met that day, talked about the ride a few times in February, and then started planning in earnest (i.e., applying for visas) in early March.

So after over three months of planning, here's what we're doing: we land in Munich tomorrow morning, and have the weekend to seek out and purchase a motorcycle for Jason (we're looking at Honda Africa Twins). Early next week we'll register the bikes, arrange for carnets de passage (for travel through foreign countries), kit out the bikes for the ride, and then have next weekend for my party. We'll leave Munich on Tuesday the 16th, and visit the Moto Guzzi factory in Italy before getting on a ferry in Genoa for an overnight trip to Tunisia we'll ride east through Libya, then south through Egypt and Sudan, and finally into Ethiopia. We expect to arrive in Addis on July 6th after just over three weeks at 7000km.

That's enough about the ride for now. I'm hoping to post updates along the way, so keep an eye on the blog here. On to the photos.

Great shots! I hope that your trip is a blast. I'm jealous!

I also see that you've seen Saul Griffith's talk on energy footprint. That is probably my favorite, as I think it's the most comprehensive assessment of global energy consumption and alternatives to meet that demand.

Cheers,
Sam
