BANGLADESH AND BEYOND
Keywords: bangladesh , treadle pumps

I'm in Bangladesh! Been busy, as usual. I'm not taking the time to post a bunch of pictures right now, but did at least want to post a quick update. Anyway, I'm in Bangladesh for a few days, then heading by land into West Bengal, India, then a few days later by land into the Terai region of Nepal. I'll eventually fly to Kathmandu, then Delhi, then Goa, then take a train to Nasik, bus to Aurangabad and then fly to Mumbai, stopping for one or two days in each of those places. Oh, and it's all for work... I'm looking at treadle pump production and supply chains in each of these areas.

First impressions... two days in Dhaka have left me struggling to place Bangladesh relative to the other countries I've been. The physical infrastructure reminds me of New Delhi... tall concrete buildings with tons of air conditioners hanging out the side, birds-nests of wires at every electrical pole, and streets filled with nice cars, junk cars, motorcycles, rickshaws, bicycles and pedestrians. Oh, and fast internet. But then the people here make me think of Nepal, as do the Bengali language and script. And the number of people begging at every major intersection reminds me of Addis. So, Bangladesh is Bangladesh. I'm looking forward to going out to the rural area tomorrow... more to come!

Parting shot...

My name is Mark. I was born near Chicago, have lived in the US, Germany and Nepal, and am starting a new job and a new adventure in Ethiopia. This site is a way for me to keep friends and family updated on my progress, share some pictures, and perhaps offer a bit of reflection along the way. Please look around, and enjoy the ride!
