The braids in your hair in the Hash photos (?) are reminiscent of corn rows...

The cliff jumping videos are really funny! I like to be able to see the rocks, though... Some of your photos are really beautiful.

What kind of oil is used in the pumps? Couldn't you use tallow or soap?

Hope you're well, Mark

  Hey Mark...

I absolutely agree with your dilemma about double pricing. I don't mind paying a different rate at museums,etc..., and don't really mind paying a bit more in the markets.... but I really dislike paying triple, or more. And I really don't appreciate it in things like a taxi ride. But then I stop and think, 'Even at 3x the going rate, it's still less than ______ dollars!' and feel guilty for not wanting to pay more than the locals. *sigh* Part of the dilemma of traveling, I guess.

Love the photos and the videos!!

Jennifer - yep, corn rows are popular here. To me though, cornrows just don't really work for people with light complexions and dark hair. Something about the resulting contrasting stripes just doesn't work for me. That doesn't stop the locals from trying with my hair though...

Mark - Thanks for the compliment on the photos. I just ordered a new prime lens, so we'll see what I can do with it.

As for the oil that's used in the pumps, my hunch is that it's just the effluent of the local auto mechanics workshops. That means used motor oil, coolant, particles from the inside of other peoples' engines and who knows what else. Rickshaw drivers in Kathmandu used the same stuff for their bearings because it was so cheap. Tallow or soap might work though... I'm not even certain that they've been tried. Regardless of which lubricant is used, that particular type of seal that pushes up against the inside of the cylinder will always have energy-sapping friction in it. I think there are a couple of better options out there, which we're exploring.

Can't fight "local wisdom," though. "down-cycling" motor oil is pretty smart and cheap. Wouldn't want to drink it, though. The metallic particles in it probably aren't important-- they'll break down with time-- the coolant and combustion byproducts, like sulfur and various weird acids probably aren't great either, but I'd imagine that they're not dumping quarts and quarts of oil on the seals, or?..

I'm getting ready to buy another camera now. The Casio that I bought has problems being in focus in the lower right of the frame. Sometimes it's in focus, sometimes not. Weird...
